Gilton Mkumbwa is one of Malawi’s most distinguished chess arbiters, holding the prestigious International Arbiter (Category C) licence, allowing him to officiate at any international chess event worldwide.
In 2025, he contributed as editor and author for the FIDE Arbiters’ Manual, guided tournament procedures, and served as Match Arbiter at the World Rapid and Blitz Team Championships in London.
Regionally, he led the Malawi Open Individual Chess Championship, mentoring 14 arbiters — seven of whom became FIDE National Arbiters — and ensuring strict compliance with international standards.
At the national level, he was Chief Arbiter for multiple youth, individual, and schools team championships, setting the bar for excellence, mentorship, and integrity in chess officiating — Gilton Mkumbwa.
