The Chess Association of Malawi (CHESSAM) demonstrated outstanding commitment to grassroots chess development, through the National Schools Chess League. In 2024, CHESSAM made remarkable progress in expanding chess accessibility, fostering long-term sustainability and addressing social challenges.
Key Achievements include:
o Over 1,000 students were engaged in structured chess competitions and training sessions in all the 7 education divisions across Malawi.
o Trained over 20 school patrons from primary schools in Lilongwe and Mzuzu for long – term sustainability of chess programs.
o Through collaboration with the private sector such as NICO Asset Managers and Pyxus/Alliance One expanded the Chess education to new schools in the northern and central regions.
o Used Chess as a tool to address social challenges, by curbing child labour in tobacco-growing districts.
